Portimao is the Algarve's second city and is said to be the shopping capital. With pedestrainised cobbled streets it is well worth a visit and is famous for the 2 S`s - Shopping and Sardines. Make sure you combine a stroll around the shops - be sure to take in the many shoe shops and those specialising in crystal and ceramics - with a lunch of sardines, salad ,fresh bread and wine on the harbour quayside.
A newly constructed harbour quayside walkway means you can walk all the way to the new Marina at Rocha from the centre and take in the views of the many stunning yachts and boats. Along the quayside there are many Operators selling various boat trips either inland along the river or out to sea. You can hire a bike for the day from the quayside or enjoy a delicious ice cream on your way.
On the first Monday of the month throughout the year Portimao plays host to the travelling Gypsy Market so if you are searching for a bargain and fancy a bit of a barter then there are clothes, shoes, leather goods and lots of handicraft products on offer.
With so much on offer in this area of the Algarve, you are certain to have a great stay whatever time of the year you are visiting.
