And being further from the crowds of the more central Algarve does have many advantages.
The town itself is still small enough that restaurant, pub & shop owners will have a genuine warm welcome for you and will remember your name after one visit. These restaurants offer excellent value for money.
The prices in many restaurant and pubs are generally 15 to 20% lower than you would pay in many other parts of the Algarve.
The Luz beach is spectacular in itself. It is said to have curative powers for arthritis and other illnesses, due to the reflection onto the beach and ocean from the high cliffs.
The large curving beach is a natural sun trap and is perfect for catching the sun in the summer or winter. Off season Luz Bay is even more attractive than during the season since it is so idyllically quiet yet still offers the long peaceful beach, and the shops, restaurants and pubs.
JUST OUTSIDE LUZ BAY
Luz Bay is within a 15 minute drive of some of the best, unspoiled beaches in the Algarve, almost every little road leads down to a different beach, each one prettier than the last.
WEST COAST BEACHES
The beaches along Portugal's west coast are less than a half hour drive from Luz. They are renown throughout Portugal for surfing, fishing from the towering cliffs (Sagres), and enjoying some of the best fresh fish the ocean has to offer. These beaches are shown on the 'West Coast Drive' map on this site.
DRIVE INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE
From LUZ heading off into the unspoiled reaches of the countryside is only a matter of minutes, and if you follow the suggestions on the FREEMAPS you will find some very good county stopovers, markets, and villages
And dont miss the walk along the waterside promenade at night when you can still see the tiny lights of many small fishing boats bobbing in the ocean, just as they did over 100 years ago.
