FREEMAPS here!!
Unfortunately Lagoa has been recently bypassed by many tourists. However it only takes a few hours to explore and it interesting to wander around its small streets and visit its shops and sidewalk cafes. It is best to park you car and walk to the centre as it is a small town. (although officially a city!).
The traditional market probably dates back to the beginning of the original inhabitation of the village. The famous church bell (from 1895), on top of the MARKET still rings every morning. It is called the voice of the people. Originally it rang to tell the people that the fresh fish had arrived. Today, is it easy to find REAL LOCAL produce here, including local olives, honey, dried flowers, homemade bread & cakes. The market is open every morning except Sunday. The biggest day would be Saturday morning closing around 1pm.
There are walking streets with shops, boutiques and sidewalk cafes for coffee or a cold beer.
Right beside the market is the Igreja da Misericordia (Church of Mercy) middle of 18th Century, with beautiful hand painted tiles inside, have a look if the doors are open. PLEASE be respectful because this church is still used for funerals.
The Convent, Convento de Sao Jose (1738) survived the earthquake that happened on all Saints Day (November 1st) 1755. It is the building that stretches across the road and cars drive underneath. (See Photo in Lagoa Photo gallery). It is now used for changing exhibitors and art shows. Usually entrance is free or very reasonable.
Fatacil is a Giant Fair put on by the Lagoa Council for 10 days during the later part of August. Well worth a visit. With very reasonable entrance price.
